Student Spotlight

Today we wanted to spotlight Marilenn, one of our very talented students!  We’ve enjoyed getting to know her through her design work, so we thought we’d ask a few questions so that you all could get to know her, too.  Read on to learn more!

How did you hear about Nicole’s Classes?

Through endless searching for a good Illustrator class! I’d taken a few at computer schools but felt that I didn’t take away that much from them. One day I’d found Nicole’s classes on the web and read the reviews that they were super informative, but manageable and not too overwhelming. So I signed up. I learned so much from my first Illustrator class more than I had ever learned from taking classes in person.

Which classes have you taken from Nicole’s Classes?

I’ve taken a lot of the Illustrator classes and I am also dying to take Tabletop Photography!

What got you interested in design?

I’d always loved arts and crafts as a kid and creating has always been part of my life! But when I got to college, graphic design wasn’t offered at my school but I took computer classes on my own, studied photography, and interned at a magazine.

Come time for our wedding in 2010, I got a little obsessed with wedding monograms and other wedding related paper goods! It was really at this point that I fell in love with graphic design and started doing more design work.

Where do you get inspiration for your work?

My mom has always been a great source of inspiration and influence. She is one talented lady who’s done interiors, events, flowers, jewelry, and so much more plus she has impeccable taste. I like to feel that my skills are a manifestation of hers, but only in computer program form.

What was the hardest part of getting from where you started to where you are now?

Honestly? Starting out. For the longest time, fear had kept me from well, believing in myself and my abilities. What if I wasn’t good enough? What if no one liked my stuff? What if I failed?

When I moved to California in 2010, the economy in California wasn’t great and finding a job was tough. Lucky for me, my husband has a steady job and he was 100% supportive about my decision to become a freelance graphic designer. So I signed up for Nicole’s Classes. And haven’t looked back!

A little about her shop.

Marilenn also heads up M byAlcantara Design, an Etsy shop that offers not only physical products like tags and labels, but templates, printables, custom designs, and printing!  Her work is elegant, classy, and fun.
