The first session of this class will be held in February 2013. This class is held every other month and generally starts the first Monday of that month and continues for 4 weeks.

How do you choose what products to buy at the store? Whether you have thought about it or not, logos and branding change how you act everyday. But what makes a logo good? What makes an identity strong?

A good identity involves more than just a logo — it’s a whole system of icons, colors, typefaces, and design elements that serves as a foundation and  a guide. Whether you are designing an identity for a client or for yourself, this class will go step by step and show you how to build one that is strong, cohesive, and effective.

Melanie will show you how to research, edit, work with clients, and design all the pieces of an identity. She’ll cover logos, icons, business cards, stationery, style guides and other special elements. There will be fun homework assignments, and a strong emphasis on the editing and refining process as that is an essential step to any good identity.

The Nicole’s Classes application is a downloadable program you install on your computer. (The link to download will be provided the day the class starts.) Learning is divided into 4 weeks and within those weeks you can learn at your own pace, anytime, anywhere. There are no set class times, though homework is due every Sunday night and there may be scheduled chats with the instructor. Our classes are flexible, fit into most any schedule and we happily welcome international students!

This class is for beginners with little to no knowledge of design. The class will be taught in Illustrator, so you must have basic knowledge of that program to take this class. If you do not already know the basics, please enroll in  Illustrator 101 as a prerequisite. Illustrator must be installed on your computer. Versions CS2 and above are acceptable. Adobe offers free 30-day trials of this program.
