Free Summer Patterns!

One of my favorite classes to teach is Illustrator: Making a Pattern. Here are a few patterns that I made today as I was testing out the new CS6 pattern making features! (Update to the class coming in July!)

These patterns are perfectly tiled, so feel free to download them and use them! They will work well for blog backgrounds, twitter backgrounds, or desktop wallpapers. Just right-click the file and save it to your computer. Upload it to the site where you want to use it, and choose to tile it! Leave a comment letting us know where you used the pattern. We’d love to check out your sites!

If you’d like to learn to make patterns in Illustrator, too, I recommend Illustrator 101 (if you have no Illustrator experience) and Illustrator: Making a Pattern!

(Note that these are for personal use only. I do sell my patterns for use on web, textiles, stationery, etc. Visit me at Ollibird if you want to find out more.)

Mary, let us know how it goes! These files are meant for use on the web, so they’re low resolution and might not print great. But if you size them down, you will get better print quality. They just might be super tiny!

Hi, Becky! I believe that Blogger now has a way for you to just upload the background file. It’s pretty easy, but it’s been a while since I’ve used Blogger so I couldn’t point you out to EXACTLY where you’ll find it!

  20. 24

On my desktop wallpaper it looks a bit pixelated. Any tips to make it clear? thanks!

    • 35

Yep! These are repeat pattern tiles, so you don’t want your computer to STRETCH them or size them up. On a Mac, when I’m choosing the image for my desktop, I can also choose whether to center it, stretch it, or tile it. You’ll want to choose “tile” for these backgrounds!

  30. 36

Thank you! I will now twitter with seagulls!

  31. 37

Real cute designs, thanks very much for sharing them, I have applied the poppies´ to my Twitter account. They are big but definitelly fresher: https://twitter.com/#!/garcia_chus

thank you so much for this! i used the poppy pattern on my twitter page, and have just spent a loong time admiring your “assorted patterns” – all gorgeous!

  34. 40

these patterns are super awesome! I actually saved them all to my desktop and tried different ones on my blog but i am so technology impaired, I don’t really know how i got my layout to just be the simple boring layout that it is, and the backgrounds only showed up on either side of my text. I wouldnt understand how to change the rest of my colors to match, either, but at least I can still use the flamingo background on my desktop :)
