We’re re-imagining a popular series here on the blog — recommended typefaces! Our students and readers are always asking us for font recommendations so we thought it was about time to refresh our lists. Free, paid, serif, script, hand drawn… there are so many choices out there, and it can be overwhelming! We have waded through a lot to give you our best and favorite recommendations, and this is just the first of many.
This week we’re starting with our favorite free fonts that are super versatile and that can work in many designs. Click on the links below the image to download all 10 of our first recommended typefaces!
*Please note: Make sure to read the fine print on any and all fonts you download. Some are totally free, free only for personal use, available for commercial use if you pay, etc. We respect all artists in the creative community, and we want to make sure we use fonts as specified by the artist.
A note before we begin: In April, we asked our former students to share their unique and amazing Nicole’s Classes stories with us. And share they did! Today is the second installment of this series (see the first here), where each student will tell you in their own words (and with examples of their own work!) how Nicole’s Classes has helped them on their creative journey. Enjoy!
Hi, my name is Britney Johnson and this is my story!
Ribbon banners are a very “in” graphic design trend, you’ve seen ’em on greeting cards and posters and everywhere in between. Well now you can easily add this fun look to all your designs by watching Illustrator 101 & 102 teacher Holly’s newest free video tutorial!
A note before we begin: In April, we asked our former students to share their unique and amazing Nicole’s Classes stories with us. And share they did! Today is the first installment of our “My Nicole’s Classes Story” series, where each student will tell you in their own words (and with examples of their own work!) how Nicole’s Classes has helped them on their creative journey. I am so thankful for every last thing I have learned from Nicole’s Classes! I can’t remember exactly how I stumbled upon this golden nugget of a website, but my goodness I’d be nowhere near the place I am today without it.
It seems like just yesterday we were posting about popsicles and summer, and now it’s all backpacks and pencils and classrooms. To help you ease into the transition to fall, I’ve created a free fun school themed seamless pattern you can download and use in Illustrator!
Our first arrangement is from international student Sara Cangueiro. Sara joined the class from Portugal and created this truly stunning bridal bouquet. We’re blown away not only by her beautiful arrangement, but by the beautiful photos as well. You can see more from Sara at her her blog Hoje é Especial.
I have a lot of people ask me how to get that natural, soft, wildflower look for flower arrangements. Most of it is in the selection of your flowers! Edit ruthlessly and only choose stems that you really love that will add something to your composition. Obviously shopping straight from the garden is ideal, but if you can’t, here are some guidelines when you are shopping your local grocery or florist for stems.
Ever wanted to create an inspiration board but didn’t know how to do it and create it quickly? Well Niice.com is a new website that can help you create your own mood boards, which you can print to hang up in your office or email to clients. I love using this tool, and it’s a major time saver when you don’t have the time or need to create a more elaborate board in Photoshop. Here’s an example of a mood board I just created:
Enjoy playing with Niice (but beware, it can be addicting)!
How is it already August 1st? It seems like summer just started, and now it’s almost fall! At any rate, a new month means new free wallpapers for your desktop and mobile devices! And this month we chose a theme that will help us really stretch the sun out as long as possible…
